Viña Los Vascos

“I could not resist being a pioneer in Chile and giving a challenge to my team. We chose the place for its unique location and land”
Baron Eric de Rothschild

The vineyard

A great vineyard that has matured

In one single plot, the vineyard is located at 34°30’ latitude and 71°30’ longitude, 40 km from the Pacific Ocean and 200 km to the southwest of Santiago. It is the largest vineyard in the central Colchagua valley, at the foot of Mount Cañeten.

The 560 hectares under vine are composed of sandy-clay soils and granite soils, both of volcanic origin. The vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) Carménère (5%), Syrah (4%), Malbec (1%) and Chardonnay (5%). Given that there was major replanting at the beginning of the 1990s, the vineyard is divided between a group of 15-year old plots and another group of 40 to 50-year old plots. The oldest grapevines are 70 years old. The Sauvignon blanc and some of the Chardonnay at Los Vascos come from vines under long term contracts in the cooler regions of Casablanca and Curico.

Viticultural methods are traditional. In addition, methods such as cultivation without irrigation, limited drip irrigation and green harvesting are used on the main plots of vines to maximise the quality of the grapes.
