Rothschild exhibition in Paris

September 2012

The exhibition “The Rothschilds in France in the 19th century” takes place in Paris from 20 November 2012 until 10 February 2013 at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (the National Library of France).

James de Rothschild, who acquired Château Lafite Rothschild in 1868, takes centre stage in this exhibition.

On arrival in Paris in the 19th century he rapidly became a major protagonist in the world of high finance and took an active role in the economic development of the country at the height of the Industrial Revolution.

Through this exhibition the visitor is able to discover a different side to the symbolic figure of James de Rothschild, beyond his traditional banking activities. His life, his active participation in industrial projects (railways, mines) and his numerous charitable works are illustrated through a wealth of archive material: paintings, antiques, books, documents and photographs.
