Gueorgui Pinkhassov was born in Moscow in 1952.
After studying cinema at the VGIK (Moscow Institute of Cinematography), he joined the Moscow Union of Graphic Arts, and was awarded independent artist status in 1978. His work was then noticed by the famous Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky, who invited him to produce a reportage on the shooting of his film Stalker in 1979.
His first book Sightwalk (1988) explores individual details especially through reflections and particular kinds of light, which often tend towards abstraction.
Pinkhassov joined Magnum in 1988.
